Quadrantids Meteor Shower

January 3, 2025 @ 8:00 pm 9:30 pm

Most meteor showers get their name from the constellations they are related to. However, the Quadrantids constellation no longer exists, except in memory. The name Quadrantids comes from the French astronomer Jerome Lalande after discovering the constellation Quadrans Muralis in 1795. This constellation would remain in the night sky between Bootes and Herdsman and Draco the Dragon until 1922, when the International Astronomical Union (IAU) created a list of the 88 modern constellations and opted to leave it off the list. If this meteor shower had not happened, it would have been lost to history. Come to the Nature Center to view some of the meteors from this lost constellation. This particular meteor shower runs from mid-November through mid-January each year, with the peak being January 2 and 3rd. Wear warm clothes and bring your chairs for this free family event.
